Learn what's important on a motherboard with my computer motherboard reviews

By Robert B.

You should definitely have a look at plenty of computer motherboard reviews when choosing the most critical component for your PC, the motherboard.

The motherboard is the heart and soul of your PC, a vital component that should not be overlooked.

So what features should you look for when reading motherboard reviews?

Here are a couple of my recommendations:

  • Processor Socket Type - This is a very critical choice when reading computer motherboard reviews. If you already have a certain processor, then you have to find a motherboard that will accept that same processor. You should look at motherboards that support AT LEAST a Pentium III or a corresponding Athlon processor. The easiest way to assure that your processor will fit your motherboard is to buy a motherboard & processor combo , which is generally cheaper than buying the components separate anyhow.

  • Form Factor - You want to know if your motherboard will fit in the computer case you have, right? When reading computer motherboard reviews, look for the form factor of the motherboard. The most common types being the Baby AT, AT, Mini ATX, and ATX, with the ATX being the most widely supported. Larger motherboards require a larger case, which can be troublesome, but they generally offer more avenues to upgrade, such as with more PCI cards.

  • RAM Supported - When shopping for a new motherboard, you want to notice which type(s) of RAM that it supports. You should get a motherboard that at least supports DDR memory. Also in computer motherboard reviews, you should see it requires RD (Rambus) RAM. Although it is the fastest type of RAM on the market, it requires two fairly expensive chips to be used at once.

  • On-Board Components - Finally, you should look for certain on-board components, while avoiding others. Look in the motherboard reviews to see if they mention on-board video, audio, and ethernet. Stay away from motherboards that offer on-board video, you'll find that this technology will become outdated very quickly, while on-board sound is actually desirable because it frees a PCI slot and the sound quality is usually good. On-board Ethernet LAN is another item to look for in computer motherboard reviews because for the most part it is considered standard and frees up another PCI slot.

With those various motherboard features in mind, lets look at some of my computer motherboard reviews:

Asus - P4P800E Deluxe - Socket 478 ATX Motherboard
Buy one of these here.

  • Processor Socket Type - Socket 478 (Intel)
  • Form Factor - ATX
  • RAM Supported - Up to 4 GB DDR
  • On-Board Components - Audio, Ethernet LAN, USB 2.0, Firewire
Conclusion - This Asus motherboard comes with all of the bells and whistles. If you are planning on building a machine that can be easily upgraded, this is the motherboard to start building with. Could offer more PCI slots, but all of the on-board features make up for this. My computer motherboard review - A great motherboard that can be easily upgraded, saving you money in the long run.

Asus A8N-SLI NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard
Buy one of these here.

  • Processor Socket Type - Socket 939
  • Form Factor - ATX
  • RAM Supported - Up to 4 GB DDR
  • On-Board Components - Audio, Ethernet LAN, USB 2.0, Firewire, PCI-Express, SATA connections
Conclusion - This Asus motherboard is essentially the same as the above except it supports an Athlon processor instead of an Intel. But it also will handle 64 instead of 32 bits. My computer motherboard review - This motherboard more than likely performs identically to the motherboard above, except for it is more expensive and the processor that it supports costs more as well.

Intel D955XBKLKR Intel Socket 775 ATX Motherboard
Buy one of these here.

  • Processor Socket Type - Socket 775
  • Form Factor - ATX
  • RAM Supported - Up to 4 GB DDR
  • On-Board Components - Audio, Ethernet LAN, USB 2.0, PCI-Express, SATA inputs
Conclusion - If you're on more of a tight budget, give this motherboard a good look. It essentially offers all of the same features as above, except for considerably less. My computer motherboard review - An exceptional motherboard at a great price. The price is very reasonable for the features that it offers.

Once you've selected your motherboard after looking at some reviews, make sure you select a processor that is compatible with it. As stated above, the safest decision is to consider a motherboard & CPU combo. Now, lets get on to installing a motherboard.
