Definition of Socket Size

The socket size refers to the slot on a motherboard that allows you to input a processor.

As you are probably well aware, there are many types of processors and motherboards available, but not all of them can be used with each other. Motherboards have specific socket sizes and only allow specific types of processors, generally AMD or Intel, not both. In addition, most motherboards only support processors of certain speeds.

Before you purchase a processor for your motherboard, make sure it's brand and speed is supported by the socket of your motherboard. All motherboard instructions and information sheets should include the supported processors.

On a side note, the easiest way to avoid motherboard & processor incompatibility issues is to purchase a motherboard & processor bundle. This way you're assured your computer building experience will get off to a great start!
