Definition of Spindle Speed

How fast the spindle turns on a piece of machinery, such as a hard drive, CD drive, or DVD drive. Is always measured it RPM's or Revolutions Per Minute.

The better drives boast faster RPM's which translates into faster access of your data and writing of new data to your drive.

Current Spindle Speed (RPMs) Averages

SCSI Hard drive: 10000 -> 15000
Serial ATA Hard drive: 7200 -> 10000
IDE Hard drive: 5400 -> 7200
